In Gothenburg City, we have a net¬work that deals with methodology issues on how the goal of including the child’s perspective can be achieved within our various areas of responsibility. Representatives from the city districts and administrative departments participate in the network by sharing their perspectives. In 2010, the network and forum for the child’s perspective, were launched at a conference with the theme, “Children need space”. The results of the experience and knowledge that were exchanged have been compiled in this document. We have attempted to collect and document a portion of the knowledge that resulted from this collaboration. Björn Klarqvist is Professor Emeritus in Urban design and planning at Chalmers Universtiy of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden. He is one of the most prominent authorities in Sweden in “building-oriented crime prevention”. His assessment of the work of the Göteborg Council for Crime Prevention has an even wider perspective than his area of expertise. This book is first and foremost a description of measures implemented and methods used in crime prevention work in Göteborg. It also contains insightful comments about what people in Sweden mean today when they use words like “safety” and “security”, as well as ideas about democratic societies as the precondition for the safety and security of all. We cannot imagine that if we just lock the door behind us we will be safe. That´s why safety and security are no simple matter.Participation - on the children´s own terms?
The population of Sweden includes two million children. They are a group who, by virtue of their power of experimentation and wealth of ideas, have the ability to lead society in new directions. This of course assumes that children are involved when decisions of various kinds need to be made. Children´s right to participation is a much-discussed subject which is not as simple as it might seem. What, for example, does that right mean, and why should children participate? And how can we go about creating the conditions for that participation? Some of the answers can be found in this research overview compiled by PhD Monica Nordenfors. The book is thoughtprovoking and opens up new perspectives, on both children and adults.Like laying a Puzzel
In the autumn of 1998 a terrible fire broke out at a discotheque in Gothenburg. 63 young people died. Hundreds were injured and traumatized. In this book, six severely affected individuals talk about the night of the fire and their subsequent healing in the years that followed. The adolescents were among a group of people with whom the Support Centre in Hisingen worked over a number of years. One important aspect of this work was that the survivors should form their own pictures of what they had gone through. “Like Laying a Puzzle” became a metaphor that brought together staff and victims and laid down the foundations of a unique collaborative process aiming to reassert meaning and control over the trauma that had torn lives to shreds. After a group reunion ten years after the fire, an idea was put forward to make a retroactive assessment of our working process. It seemed relevant to document shared experiences and make them accessible to others. As one of the young men affected by the fire said. “What is the point of experience if it is not used to help others?” This book is recommended for practioners in professional contact with survivors of traumatic experiences. It can also be used for training purposes.People make people feel secure
Media researcher Gabriella Sandstig´s doctoral thesis is about what makes us feel insecure in public spaces. She has investigated how our fear is influenced by the media, social factors, the physical environment and our own experiences. One of her conclusions is that people are made to feel secure by other people.Step by step for a safer and more secure Göteborg - A manual

The Art of Being for Real opens up new paths and perspectives concerning the right of children and young people to self-expression. Young & Creative is an example of young people having access to a place in which to meet and express themselves artistically. The setting for this was Röda Sten Art Centre in Gothenburg. While the meeting between young people was a founding concept, the project also had certain pedagogically groundbreaking aspects in that it brought together two different professions – social workers and art pedagogues. The bag – a film not to be afraid of
